Jewel Buchanan-Boone is a doula with the San Francisco General Hospital. Her philosophy and approach to birth work are rooted in her passion for reproductive and social justice. Our interview explores the dynamics of working as a volunteer in public hospitals and in providing support to people who might not otherwise have access to care. The interview also addresses the need to break cycles of oppression within communities of color particularly in relation to generational trauma and stigmas that surround black motherhood. Jewel concludes by urging greater recognition of the embodied power of love that stems from birthing suggesting that this force could radically transform society if incorporated into other aspects of social life.
